Credit card approval stages explained: from application to activation

Understand each stage of a card application: submitted, under verification, approved, dispatched and activated, and what partners should do at each.

A credit card application passes through several stages before the customer holds an active card. Each stage can take time. Knowing them helps you guide customers and understand your referral dashboard.

1. Application submitted

The customer completed the bank's online form. The bank now begins its checks.

2. Credit and document verification

The bank pulls the credit report, checks income and verifies documents. It may also verify employment or address.

3. Video KYC or verification call

Many banks complete KYC through a video call. Some also call to confirm details. Missing this step often stalls applications.

4. Decision: approved or declined

Based on the checks, the bank approves, declines or sometimes asks for more documents.

5. Card issued and dispatched

After approval, the card is printed and sent by courier to the customer's address. The PIN or activation instructions come separately.

6. Card activated

The customer activates the card through the bank's app, net banking or as instructed. Some campaigns require activation or a first transaction for the referral to count.

How long does it take?

It varies by bank and applicant. Some decisions are quick; others take longer, especially if documents need re-verification. Delivery depends on the address and courier.

Where applications get stuck

  • Video KYC not completed
  • Missed verification calls
  • Additional documents requested but not uploaded
  • Address issues delaying delivery

What partners should do at each stage

  • Submitted: confirm the customer completed every step.
  • Verification: remind them to keep the phone available and complete video KYC.
  • Declined: be supportive; explain that banks decide based on credit and income.
  • Dispatched: remind them to watch for the courier and keep ID ready.
  • Activated: if required by the campaign, explain the condition honestly; never pressure spending.

Your referral status vs the bank status

Bank updates may reach your dashboard later. Platforms receive results from issuers periodically. A card might be active today while your lead updates days later.

Activation and responsible use

Encourage the customer to set up autopay or reminders for bills and to read the welcome kit, especially fees and interest. A customer who uses the card responsibly is better off and less likely to close it.

Key points to remember

  • Verification and video KYC are the most common bottlenecks.
  • Approval depends on the bank's assessment, not on the partner.
  • Activation or first use may be the campaign condition.
  • Dashboard updates can lag the bank's actual status.
  • Encourage responsible use from day one.

Summary

Understanding approval stages lets you follow up at the right moment and keep customers informed. Patience and honest guidance lead to better outcomes. See why applications get declined for more.

A sample timeline

  • Day 1: the customer applies in the evening and completes video KYC the next morning.
  • Day 2 to 4: the bank verifies documents and credit history.
  • Day 4 or 5: approval message arrives.
  • Day 6 to 10: the card is delivered by courier.
  • Day 10: the customer activates the card in the bank app.
  • A few days later: the referral status updates on the platform.

Timelines vary, but sharing a realistic picture like this helps customers stay patient.

Delivery tips

The customer should keep an ID ready for the courier, make sure someone is available at the address, and track the shipment through the bank's messages. Undelivered cards are often returned to the bank, causing long delays.

Never ask for card details

Once the card arrives, never ask the customer for the card number, expiry date, CVV or PIN, even to "check activation". Activation is something they do themselves in the bank app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track a customer's application?

The customer can track it on the bank's website or app. Your dashboard shows the referral status shared by the issuer.

Does the card need to be activated for the referral to count?

It depends on the campaign. Many require activation or a first transaction.
