eSign problems in demat applications: a troubleshooting guide

eSign is the final step of online demat opening, and the most common place to get stuck. Learn how it works and how to fix OTP, PIN and timeout issues.

eSign is the last step of an online demat application. It legally signs the account opening form using Aadhaar-based authentication. When eSign fails, the whole application sits incomplete. Here is how to help customers get through it.

How eSign works

The broker sends the completed form to an eSign service provider. The customer enters their Aadhaar number (or a virtual ID), receives an OTP on the Aadhaar-linked mobile, and confirms. The signed document is returned to the broker.

Problem 1: OTP not received

Causes: Aadhaar not linked to the current mobile, network issues, SMS blocking apps, or the SIM in the wrong slot.

Fixes: confirm the linked number on the official UIDAI portal; check signal; look in spam or blocked SMS folders; wait a minute before requesting again. If the Aadhaar mobile is outdated, it must be updated first. Read why the Aadhaar mobile link matters.

Problem 2: OTP expired or entered incorrectly

Fixes: request a new OTP and enter it promptly. Avoid switching apps for too long.

Problem 3: Session timeout

eSign pages often time out if left idle. Fix: start the eSign step only when the customer is ready to finish it in one go.

Problem 4: Name or detail mismatch

If details in the form don't match Aadhaar, eSign may fail or the broker may reject later. Fix: check that the name and date of birth were entered correctly earlier in the form.

Problem 5: Service provider down

Occasionally, the eSign service is temporarily unavailable. Fix: wait and try later. The application is usually saved.

Problem 6: Too many attempts

After several failed attempts, the service may block further tries for a while. Fix: wait for some time before retrying.

What not to do

  • Never ask the customer to share the OTP with you.
  • Never use your own phone or Aadhaar for any step.
  • Don't start new applications repeatedly; continue the saved one.

After eSign succeeds

The customer usually sees a confirmation and may receive an email copy of the signed form. The application then goes to the broker for review. Encourage the customer to keep the email for reference.

A short checklist before eSign

  1. 1Aadhaar-linked mobile in hand, with signal.
  2. 2Five uninterrupted minutes.
  3. 3Details in the form double-checked.
  4. 4SMS app open to see the OTP quickly.

Key points to remember

  • eSign uses an Aadhaar OTP to sign the form legally.
  • Most failures relate to the linked mobile, timeouts or mismatched details.
  • Continue saved applications instead of starting over.
  • The customer alone should handle OTPs.
  • Keep the signed form email for records.

Summary

eSign is the finish line. Many applications stop just before it. A little preparation and calm troubleshooting help customers complete their applications, which is good for them and for genuine referral results. See how long account opening takes for what happens next.

A real-world style example

Amit reaches the eSign step on a crowded train. The OTP arrives late because of weak signal, the page times out, and he gives up. That evening, his referral partner suggests trying again at home on Wi-Fi with the phone's SMS app open. Amit logs back in, continues his saved application and finishes eSign in two minutes. Timing and environment often matter more than anything technical.

When to contact the broker

If eSign fails repeatedly even with a correctly linked Aadhaar mobile and good network, the customer should contact the broker's official support with a screenshot of the error. Support teams can often see what went wrong and suggest an alternative, such as physical signing. Do not keep retrying endlessly, as repeated failures can trigger temporary blocks.

Frequently asked questions

Can eSign be done without Aadhaar?

Some brokers offer physical signing of forms as an alternative, which takes longer.

Is eSign legally valid?

Aadhaar-based eSign is a recognised method of electronic signature in India.
