Common UPI frauds and how to prevent them

Collect request scams, QR code tricks, fake customer care numbers and screen-sharing apps: learn the common UPI frauds and simple ways to stay safe.

By Earn MUFAD team3 min read

UPI is fast and convenient, which is why fraudsters target it. Most UPI frauds rely on tricking users into approving a payment. Knowing the patterns protects customers.

1. Collect request fraud

A fraudster sends a "collect request" disguised as a refund or prize. Approving it and entering the PIN sends money to the fraudster.

Rule: You never need to enter a UPI PIN to receive money.

2. QR code tricks

Fraudsters ask victims to scan a QR code to "receive" payment. Scanning and entering a PIN actually pays them.

Rule: Scanning a QR code is for paying, not receiving.

3. Fake customer care numbers

Searching online for a company's helpline can lead to fake numbers. The "agent" asks for UPI PIN or app installation.

Rule: Use helpline numbers only from official apps or websites.

4. Screen-sharing apps

Fraudsters ask victims to install apps to "fix" an issue, then watch or control the screen.

Rule: Never install apps on a caller's request.

5. Fake payment screenshots

Buyers show fake "payment successful" screenshots to sellers.

Rule: Check your bank app or SMS for actual credit before handing over goods.

6. Wrong transfer scam

Someone claims they sent money to you by mistake and asks you to send it back, sometimes after a fake SMS.

Rule: Check your actual balance; contact your bank if unsure.

What to do after fraud

  • Inform your bank immediately.
  • Report through official cyber crime channels and helplines.
  • Change PINs and passwords.
  • Keep screenshots as evidence.

A short example

Seema is selling a sofa online. A "buyer" sends a collect request labelled "payment for sofa". She remembers the rule, declines, and asks the buyer to pay directly. The "buyer" disappears.

Key points to remember

  • No PIN is needed to receive money.
  • QR codes are for paying.
  • Use official helplines only.
  • Never install apps for callers.
  • Verify credits in your bank app.

Summary

UPI fraud prevention comes down to a few simple rules. Teach them to every new account holder. Read bank account safety tips.

7. Fake job and task scams

Fraudsters offer online "tasks" like liking videos or rating products, pay small amounts first, then ask victims to deposit money for bigger "tasks". The deposits are never returned.

Rule: Genuine jobs don't ask you to pay to earn.

8. Impersonation of known contacts

Someone messages from a new number claiming to be a relative in urgent need of money.

Rule: Call the person on their known number before sending money.

Teach the 5-second check

Before entering a UPI PIN, ask: Am I paying or receiving? Do I know this payee? Did I start this payment? If any answer is unclear, stop. This tiny pause prevents most UPI frauds.

Keep transaction limits sensible

Many apps let users set daily limits. Lower limits reduce potential losses if something goes wrong.

Report and warn others

If a customer encounters a scam attempt, reporting it through official channels and warning friends and family helps protect others. Many frauds spread through the same messages and numbers, so early warnings stop them from reaching more people.

Share in local language

Fraud awareness messages work best in the language people use daily. A short message in Hindi or a regional language, shared in family groups, can prevent losses among elderly relatives and first-time users.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to enter my UPI PIN to receive money?
