Demat account vs trading account: what is the difference?

Demat and trading accounts work together but do different jobs. Understand the difference so you can answer customer questions with confidence.

People often use "demat account" and "trading account" as if they are the same thing. They are linked, but they do different jobs. Knowing the difference helps you answer questions clearly and makes customers trust you more.

The simple difference

  • Demat account: holds what you own. Think of it as a locker.
  • Trading account: used to buy and sell. Think of it as the counter where you place orders.

When you buy a share, the order goes through the trading account, the money is taken from your linked bank account, and the share lands in your demat account.

An everyday example

Imagine buying gold. The shop counter is where you pay and pick the item (trading account). The locker at home is where you keep it safe (demat account). You need both: one to buy, one to store.

Do you need both?

  • To buy and sell shares, you need both.
  • To apply for an IPO, you need a demat account to receive the shares, and usually a trading account with the broker to apply easily.
  • To only hold shares you received (for example, from an employer), a demat account is enough.

This is why most brokers open a combined "demat + trading" account in a single application.

Where does the bank account fit in?

The bank account is the third piece. Money moves from the bank account to the trading account when you buy, and back when you sell. During account opening, the broker verifies the bank account, often by sending a small test amount.

Common customer questions

"Will I be charged twice?"

Charges depend on the broker. There can be a yearly fee for the demat account and brokerage on trades. Always ask the customer to read the charges page before applying.

"Can I have a trading account with one broker and demat with another?"

It is possible but complicated. For beginners, a combined account with one broker is simpler.

"If the broker shuts down, do I lose my shares?"

Shares are recorded with the depository (CDSL or NSDL), not just with the broker. This separation is one reason the system is considered safe.

How to use this when referring

When a customer says "I only want a demat account", explain gently that a combined account lets them buy, sell and apply for IPOs easily. Do not pressure; just make the choice clear. A customer who understands what they are opening is more likely to complete it and actually use it, which is what campaigns reward. See how referral earning works for the full journey.

A quick comparison table in words

  • Purpose: demat stores securities; trading places orders.
  • Needed for IPO: demat yes; trading usually yes for easy applications.
  • Holds money: neither holds your savings; money sits in the bank or as a trading balance.
  • Charges: demat may have yearly maintenance; trading has brokerage per order.
  • Provider: demat through a depository participant; trading through a stock broker. Often the same company.

What happens when you sell a share

When you sell, the share is debited from your demat account and delivered to the exchange's clearing system. The money, after charges, is credited to your trading balance and can be withdrawn to your bank. A small charge called the DP charge may apply when shares leave the demat account. This is a normal part of the process and is listed on the broker's pricing page.

Mistakes beginners make

  1. 1Thinking that money added to the trading account is "invested". It is only invested after a buy order executes.
  2. 2Forgetting the login of the trading app and assuming the demat account is closed.
  3. 3Opening accounts with several brokers without needing them, and then paying multiple yearly fees.
  4. 4Ignoring emails from the broker, which often contain contract notes and important updates.

Helping a customer avoid these mistakes is a real service. It also means they keep using the account, which is good for them and for genuine referral approvals.

The bottom line

Demat and trading accounts are two halves of one system. One stores, the other trades. Once a customer understands that, the rest of the process feels far less confusing.
