Why a demat lead stays at “Ready to Trade” (and what you can do)

A demat lead at Ready to Trade has an open account but has not met the campaign's final condition yet. Learn what it means and how to follow up kindly.

One of the most common questions from new referral partners is: "The account is opened, so why is my lead still pending?" In many demat campaigns, the answer is a status called Ready to Trade.

What "Ready to Trade" means

The customer's account has been opened and activated by the broker. They can log in and trade. But the campaign's final condition, often adding funds or completing a first trade, has not happened yet. Until that condition is met, the referral is open but not approved, and no commission is credited.

Why brokers use this rule

A broker benefits from customers who actually use the account. An account that is opened and never used has cost the broker money without any return. Linking the payout to activity protects the broker from fake or low-quality sign-ups, and that is why genuine leads matter so much.

Common reasons a customer has not traded yet

  • They opened the account for an IPO that has not opened yet.
  • They do not know how to add money to the trading account.
  • They are nervous about making their first purchase.
  • They forgot about it after opening.
  • They opened it only because someone asked them to.

How to follow up without pressure

  1. 1Ask, don't push: "Did you get your login details? Any trouble logging in?"
  2. 2Help with the app: show where the "Add funds" option is, using your own account or a screenshot.
  3. 3Suggest learning first: many people are comfortable starting with an ETF or index fund for a small amount, but the choice must be theirs.
  4. 4Respect a no: if they are not ready, leave it. A pressured customer is not a good customer.

What you must never do

  • Never place a trade for the customer.
  • Never ask for their login, password or OTP.
  • Never promise profits or "safe returns".
  • Never transfer your own money to their account to complete the condition.

These actions can get leads rejected and your account suspended, and they are unfair to the customer.

How to get more leads past this stage

The best fix happens before the account is opened: refer people who already want to invest. Students preparing for their first IPO, salaried people who want to start SIPs and small business owners looking to park savings are all good examples. A follow-up message template

Here is a short, respectful message you can adapt:

"Hi! Your account with the broker is active now. If you need any help adding money or finding your way around the app, just tell me. No hurry; invest only when you feel ready."

This message helps without pushing. It also reminds the customer that the decision is theirs.

When to stop following up

Two or three gentle reminders over a few weeks are enough. After that, let it go. Some people open accounts for future plans and start investing months later. Others decide not to invest at all, and that is their right. Repeated pressure damages your reputation and can lead to complaints.

Learn from your pending leads

Look at your pending list every week and ask:

  • Which leads came from people who really wanted to invest?
  • Which came from people who opened accounts "as a favour"?
  • Did I explain the first-trade rule before they applied?

You will quickly see a pattern. Partners who explain the campaign condition clearly at the start have far fewer leads stuck at this stage.

Key takeaway

"Ready to Trade" is not a failure. It is a stage. The account is real, and the customer may still become an investor. Your job is to be helpful and honest, and to refer people who genuinely want to invest so that more of your leads move forward on their own.
